.We checked out of our motel in Sultan at 9:00. It’s 24 °F. It got increasingly colder as we drove up the
mountain. At Stephen’s Pass (4601 ft) it
was 10 °F!! There were beautiful icicles
on all the rock faces and the trees were laden with snow. We started dropping down again and the temp
went up to a whopping 19 °F. I was
looking over the edge at the river and there was a guy actually kayaking! Brrr!
It started snowing in flurries around 10am and was still snowing when we
reached Leavenworth at 10:30. We stopped
at the Bavarian Bakery there and bought ourselves pastries and freshened our
coffees.
We got to Wenatchee by 11:30 and turned south to head
towards Quincy, WA. where Grant wanted to buy some cone sugar he’d found there
on our last trip here. This route took
us along the Columbia River for quite a ways.
We passed the Rock Island Dam and reached Quincy by 12:30. We stopped for about 30 minutes to shop and
get some lunch, then drove down to connect with US-90, which Grant didn’t know
goes across the whole USA.
We decided to stay again in Moses Lake because we’d
really liked our motel there. We went to
Walmart for some sparkly black yarn to make socks for Barbara Wilson and to the
Verizon store to have them look at Grant’s cell phone, on which the map feature
wasn’t working right (they told him to turn it off and back on again – Doh!) I finished the scarf I was knitting for Grant
and he wore it for the rest of our trip.
